Over the weekend, Adam and I participated in a sprint triathlon. It was our second time doing it. It’s a reverse triathlon so it goes run, bike, swim and I like that way better so I can jump in the water and cool off. I thought I would tell everyone about a few of the races I’ve done and a couple items I use and love for running.
Below you can see us right before we started the race and the setup of everyone’s gear. We’ve had some crazy wildfires in Utah this year and you can see how bad the air is. When I left that morning, I could smell the smoke.
I have tiny ears and most headphones hurt my ears. I used to use Skull Candy earbuds and those worked pretty well for running until I started sweating and then they wouldn’t stay in very great. Adam bought me these headphones by Bose. They’re a little bit pricier but they’re so comfy and I barely notice they’re there. Adam has the Bluetooth version of them. He broke one of his pairs a while ago and their customer service was so great and they just took care of the headphones and sent him a new pair.
I was going to say I thought the picture above was only a couple years ago but it turns out it’s from 2014! I got most of my siblings to run a 10K with me on Thanksgiving morning. I think it’s a fun thing for us to get together and do and then you feel zero guilt later when you’re eating tons. We’re actually going to try and get some of us together and run the 5K this year.
In 2013, Adam and I ran the Top of Utah half marathon. We had fun but it was hard! We did not train enough and the last couple of miles were really painful. The picture on the left is us afterward and you can see how red my face still was!
I really think that signing up for a race is more motivation to help me get out and exercise. I’m not perfect at training but it’s still better than doing nothing. Adam and I already talked about how we’re going to train better next year for the triathlon and try and beat our time from this year.
One of my essentials for running or biking is the FlipBelt. I can slide my phone in there, a snack and a key and then you just flip the belt over on your waist and everything is securely in there. I don’t even notice it when I’m running. I was worried about it falling down my waist but that doesn’t happen at all. Then I don’t have to wear an armband for my phone.
Shoes are also very important. I’m needing to go get a new pair soon. When I first started running, I would get horrible shin splints. I used to try and tape my shins in high school and that didn’t help much. I finally went to an actual running store and they put me on a treadmill and they have a camera to watch how you run. Turns out I have really high arches so my ankles would collapse in because the support wasn’t there. They put you in different shoes until it fixes the problem and you find what’s best for you. My favorite has been Asics but it really depends on what your shoe needs are. Adam loves running in Brookes. I highly suggest going to a specialized store so you can be properly fitted for a good running shoe.
