My New Year’s Resolutions

Happy Tuesday, friends! Are you resolution makers? Because I am not. And I’ve even tried to trick myself into resolutions by saying to myself, “You don’t even have to tell anybody!” but I’m here to tell you, that didn’t work either.

However, there are a lot of things I want to do this year and I’m feeling extra motivated to post it here so that I will feel somewhat responsible to update you guys on the progress. I also decided that it would be easier to make general resolutions instead of ones with an actual amount or date to hit. Then I won’t feel as discouraged when I’m nowhere near meeting that goal.

Okay so here goes nothing!

Here’s another shameless plug about Rifle Paper Co. – I went to Anthropologie last week and bought myself a new planner so I’m ready for the year!

Eat Healthier

You all know I love fries with a passion for fashion but I’m trying to ease out of that obsession for a bit. I’m sure I’ll squeeze it in there somewhere when I can but word on the street is that I need to be eating way more protein (wah wah). I’ve been eating so much more protein than I ever have dating Cody because we eat steak or prime rib quite a bit. It’s really not a bad problem to have. However, I need more so I’ll be letting you know about ways to incorporate more protein into your diet when I figure it all out.

Go to the Gym More Often

I did not set a quantity for this because I knew I would see the amount and be like, F that. But I did meet with a personal trainer yesterday at the gym and signed up to train with her twice a week. I’m really excited because I’m less likely to cancel or decide I don’t want to go when there’s an actual appointment with someone I don’t know. I did a FIT session with her yesterday to see where I was at and it kicked my butt. By the end, I was fighting back nausea and pleading with myself not to throw up. I even excused myself to sit outside in 30-degree weather so my body would calm down lol. Anyway, once the nausea subsided, I walked back inside and said, “Sign me up”. I’ll keep you updated.

Read More Books

I love to read. I really do! When I was younger, I would read a ton of books all the time. It wasn’t until I got into junior high and high school where I was forced to read books for classes that I really stopped reading regularly. I still read books but I hate being forced to do anything tbh. Now that I’m starting my last semester of college ever, I decided this goal needed to make its way back into my life.

This is my lineup for this year so far:

Big Little Lies – Liane Moriarty
Crazy Rich Asians – Kevin Kwan
China Rich Girlfriend – Kevin Kwan
Rich People Problems – Kevin Kwan
Mindhunter – John Douglas & Mark Olshaker
The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood
The Graveyard Book – Neil Gaiman

I’m really very excited because all these books sound amazing! What books are you guys reading right now?

Write More Calligraphy

I think I mentioned this in my Christmas recap but my sister got me a brush calligraphy class & kit from Melissa Esplin at Calligraphy.org. I’m stoked to start it because I’ve really wanted to sit down and just do it but I keep making excuses, especially when I see other people’s amazing calligraphy skills! I’ll try to share more things as I keep practicing.

Take More Pictures

I have a cute Polaroid camera that I never use because I keep telling myself I’ll take it on special events and I forget it EVERY SINGLE TIME. So my goal is to start bringing it along with me and just take pictures. Not just with that but I need to take more pictures with my phone. I know everyone says that you need to live in the moment and take mental pictures and I agree 100% but I also look back through my phone and realize I have nothing to share or for me to look at later. Hopefully this will help me share more of my experiences with you guys!

Are you making a resolution? Do you have suggestions for anything I mentioned above? I’d love to hear from you!
Wish me luck!
xoxo

Christmas Recap

Happy New Year’s Eve, everyone! I can’t believe this year is over. I feel like every year goes by faster and faster. I hope you all had the best time over the holidays, however you celebrate. ūüôā I thought I’d share with you some of my favorite parts about this Christmas!

We had a gingerbread house contest with my boyfriend’s family and it was so much fun. Cody and I decided to come up with our own idea beforehand instead of just using the kits. We chose to do a Christmas barn so the night before, Cody made the dough and I went over early the next day so we could start baking. I thought I would be more helpful in this area but Cody ended up being better at rolling and cutting the dough so I stuck to oven duty. After I dyed the walls of the barn red, we put all the pieces on cookie sheets, covered them with saran wrap, and set off to his parents’ house.

It was pretty funny because his mom had set up kits at everyone’s station and in comes Cody with premade gingerbread ready to assemble. Needless to say, we won AND we set the bar pretty high so now I don’t know what we are going to have to think of for next year.

I forgot to take a picture after we had cleaned up our station but this is just a glimpse of what it looked like. I made the sheep out of pretzels and marshmallows and the trees from sugar cones and green frosting. It was hard but worth it in the end! From what I hear, a trophy is coming our way ūüôā If you want to take this design on next year for your contest, you can find the instructions here.

My friends and I like to do a Secret Santa exchange every year and it’s fun because you never know who you’re going to get. This year, I got my friend Levi and he had a lot of interesting things on his list. In the end, I got him throwing axes and a hammock. I think my Amazon account is probably confused why all of a sudden I’m into axes but oh well. My friend Tino was my Secret Santa and he gave me an Amazon Echo Dot. I set it up this weekend and it’s so fun. What are your tips & tricks on what to do with Alexa?

I cannot wrap to save my life (and I can’t rap either, but that’s a different story). This year, I wrapped one present and was super proud of myself and then I took on a weird-shaped box and when I eventually ripped the paper, I gave up and finished watching 8¬†Mile. (Yes, I was watching Eminem rap while I tried to wrap for inspiration.) My sister helped me finish and I got to write their names on the boxes. We both love choosing a wrapping paper color scheme and this was mine:

Yes, that is a small gingerbread man.

For my Christmas present, Cody spoiled me big time and got me the nicest record player ever. Not only that but he bought me really nice speakers to go with it. My records sound amazing! I ran out to Target the next day to buy a table for it because I wanted to display it. I’ve spent a few days listening to my records now and made a huge list of ones I need to get next. I need to step up my gift-giving game now!

If you look in the mirror, you can tell I’m listening to Ace of Base’s The¬†Sign. Classic.

I got a lot of goodies for Christmas but a couple things I was super excited for was the Crazy¬†Rich¬†Asians trilogy by Kevin Kwan. I loved the movie so much so I’m excited to read them! My sister also got me a calligraphy set and voucher for an online class! She is my biggest supporter to keep writing so I’m excited to start that and see my handwriting improve.

How did you celebrate the holidays?

Script Fonts

I’m a total font snob. You can ask anyone! I’ve been downloading and playing around with fonts since I was little. I always scour the internet looking for new and cute fonts to use. I thought I’d share my favorites right now that are so fun to use!

I love cursive fonts and the whole modern calligraphy thing so I have a vast collection of these. However, I have 10 that I use quite a bit (& that you can get totally free, RIGHT NOW.)

Ways to Relax After a Long Day

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it before but I’m an anxious person. My anxiety really started to get more prominent a couple years ago and since then, I’ve been on the hunt to find things that will help me de-stress.

When I switched to my new position earlier this month, I noticed I was SO much less stressed than I had been. I didn’t really realize that my job was mentally straining me. I’ve been doing a lot better now but still need ways to relax more often than not.

I thought I would list some of my favorite things to do to hopefully give you some ideas!

Being Alone

I’m an introvert (even though it may not seem like it) so after a long day at work or spending the entire day with others, I have to recharge by myself. I like not having to talk and being able to hear the thoughts in my head. Many people don’t like this because it almost stresses them out more to have to deal with their own thoughts and that’s okay. Maybe your way of recharging¬†is by being with others! Either way, this is a big one for me and definitely helps me relax.

Calligraphy

This is a little hobby that I’ve picked up over the last couple of years. I’ve always had pretty good handwriting and when I was younger, I would switch out my handwriting by practicing different styles of writing certain letters. My handwriting has mostly stayed the same as I’ve gotten older¬†but I’ve improved my cursive tremendously.

I like practicing on my iPad with the Procreate app and my Apple Pencil. I’ll doodle for hours while I watch TV or listen to music.

I love Sex and the City and this is just a little doodle I made while watching.

Watching TV/Movies

I love spending the day in bed watching TV or a good movie (especially one of the rom-coms I talked about in my post). It helps me clear my mind and focus on something else besides what’s going on. Right now, I’m currently binge-watching Home Improvement. I loved this show when I was younger and the entire series is on Hulu! I’m making my family and Cody watch them with me.¬†What are your favorite things to watch when you’re stressed?

Working Out

I’m not going to lie to you guys, this is one that I¬†should do more often because whenever I do, I feel so much better. Cody’s a big runner and I probably will never get to his level but I recognize the benefits of it. I’m slowly but surely getting started. Steph also likes running. She and Adam are doing a triathlon this weekend so I’m sure she’ll share all about that!

Whether it’s just working out at the gym or going on a run, it’s definitely a great way to relieve stress.

Taking a Shower/Bath

Speaking of working out, taking a shower or a long bath right after is the absolute best. I’m not a huge fan of baths because I feel like the water gets cold way too fast. Also, I don’t have a great tub to soak in. However, both are great to relieve stress and a nice, warm shower (or cold after working out) makes me feel like a million bucks.

Shopping

Retail therapy is a real thing, guys. Whenever my sister and I feel down in the dumps or we need a quick pick-me-up, we go to the mall. I’m also a huge online shopper because I like finding good deals all over the place without necessarily having to go outside. My sister always jokes that our mailman probably hates me because of how many packages I get delivered. Oh well.

Reading

Steph and I both love to read. I don’t read as much as I should these days but if it’s a good book, I can’t put it down. One of my favorite books is The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. You can get it from Amazon here. This book changed my life! It’s all about organizing and getting rid of things that don’t bring you joy.

Organizing

Speaking of organizing, this is my biggest stress-reliever! There is nothing I like more than cleaning and organizing a space. After I read that book, I went through my closet and room and got rid of so much stuff I didn’t need. It was great! As tired as I may be, I love cleaning up my room and finding cute ways to store things. The only thing I’m missing is a great walk-in closet so I don’t have to make room for more clothes…
