My New Year’s Resolutions

Happy Tuesday, friends! Are you resolution makers? Because I am not. And I’ve even tried to trick myself into resolutions by saying to myself, “You don’t even have to tell anybody!” but I’m here to tell you, that didn’t work either.

However, there are a lot of things I want to do this year and I’m feeling extra motivated to post it here so that I will feel somewhat responsible to update you guys on the progress. I also decided that it would be easier to make general resolutions instead of ones with an actual amount or date to hit. Then I won’t feel as discouraged when I’m nowhere near meeting that goal.

Okay so here goes nothing!

Here’s another shameless plug about Rifle Paper Co. – I went to Anthropologie last week and bought myself a new planner so I’m ready for the year!

Eat Healthier

You all know I love fries with a passion for fashion but I’m trying to ease out of that obsession for a bit. I’m sure I’ll squeeze it in there somewhere when I can but word on the street is that I need to be eating way more protein (wah wah). I’ve been eating so much more protein than I ever have dating Cody because we eat steak or prime rib quite a bit. It’s really not a bad problem to have. However, I need more so I’ll be letting you know about ways to incorporate more protein into your diet when I figure it all out.

Go to the Gym More Often

I did not set a quantity for this because I knew I would see the amount and be like, F that. But I did meet with a personal trainer yesterday at the gym and signed up to train with her twice a week. I’m really excited because I’m less likely to cancel or decide I don’t want to go when there’s an actual appointment with someone I don’t know. I did a FIT session with her yesterday to see where I was at and it kicked my butt. By the end, I was fighting back nausea and pleading with myself not to throw up. I even excused myself to sit outside in 30-degree weather so my body would calm down lol. Anyway, once the nausea subsided, I walked back inside and said, “Sign me up”. I’ll keep you updated.

Read More Books

I love to read. I really do! When I was younger, I would read a ton of books all the time. It wasn’t until I got into junior high and high school where I was forced to read books for classes that I really stopped reading regularly. I still read books but I hate being forced to do anything tbh. Now that I’m starting my last semester of college ever, I decided this goal needed to make its way back into my life.

This is my lineup for this year so far:

Big Little Lies – Liane Moriarty
Crazy Rich Asians – Kevin Kwan
China Rich Girlfriend – Kevin Kwan
Rich People Problems – Kevin Kwan
Mindhunter – John Douglas & Mark Olshaker
The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood
The Graveyard Book – Neil Gaiman

I’m really very excited because all these books sound amazing! What books are you guys reading right now?

Write More Calligraphy

I think I mentioned this in my Christmas recap but my sister got me a brush calligraphy class & kit from Melissa Esplin at Calligraphy.org. I’m stoked to start it because I’ve really wanted to sit down and just do it but I keep making excuses, especially when I see other people’s amazing calligraphy skills! I’ll try to share more things as I keep practicing.

Take More Pictures

I have a cute Polaroid camera that I never use because I keep telling myself I’ll take it on special events and I forget it EVERY SINGLE TIME. So my goal is to start bringing it along with me and just take pictures. Not just with that but I need to take more pictures with my phone. I know everyone says that you need to live in the moment and take mental pictures and I agree 100% but I also look back through my phone and realize I have nothing to share or for me to look at later. Hopefully this will help me share more of my experiences with you guys!

Are you making a resolution? Do you have suggestions for anything I mentioned above? I’d love to hear from you!
Wish me luck!
xoxo

Christmas Recap

Happy New Year’s Eve, everyone! I can’t believe this year is over. I feel like every year goes by faster and faster. I hope you all had the best time over the holidays, however you celebrate. 🙂 I thought I’d share with you some of my favorite parts about this Christmas!

We had a gingerbread house contest with my boyfriend’s family and it was so much fun. Cody and I decided to come up with our own idea beforehand instead of just using the kits. We chose to do a Christmas barn so the night before, Cody made the dough and I went over early the next day so we could start baking. I thought I would be more helpful in this area but Cody ended up being better at rolling and cutting the dough so I stuck to oven duty. After I dyed the walls of the barn red, we put all the pieces on cookie sheets, covered them with saran wrap, and set off to his parents’ house.

It was pretty funny because his mom had set up kits at everyone’s station and in comes Cody with premade gingerbread ready to assemble. Needless to say, we won AND we set the bar pretty high so now I don’t know what we are going to have to think of for next year.

I forgot to take a picture after we had cleaned up our station but this is just a glimpse of what it looked like. I made the sheep out of pretzels and marshmallows and the trees from sugar cones and green frosting. It was hard but worth it in the end! From what I hear, a trophy is coming our way 🙂 If you want to take this design on next year for your contest, you can find the instructions here.

My friends and I like to do a Secret Santa exchange every year and it’s fun because you never know who you’re going to get. This year, I got my friend Levi and he had a lot of interesting things on his list. In the end, I got him throwing axes and a hammock. I think my Amazon account is probably confused why all of a sudden I’m into axes but oh well. My friend Tino was my Secret Santa and he gave me an Amazon Echo Dot. I set it up this weekend and it’s so fun. What are your tips & tricks on what to do with Alexa?

I cannot wrap to save my life (and I can’t rap either, but that’s a different story). This year, I wrapped one present and was super proud of myself and then I took on a weird-shaped box and when I eventually ripped the paper, I gave up and finished watching 8 Mile. (Yes, I was watching Eminem rap while I tried to wrap for inspiration.) My sister helped me finish and I got to write their names on the boxes. We both love choosing a wrapping paper color scheme and this was mine:

Yes, that is a small gingerbread man.

For my Christmas present, Cody spoiled me big time and got me the nicest record player ever. Not only that but he bought me really nice speakers to go with it. My records sound amazing! I ran out to Target the next day to buy a table for it because I wanted to display it. I’ve spent a few days listening to my records now and made a huge list of ones I need to get next. I need to step up my gift-giving game now!

If you look in the mirror, you can tell I’m listening to Ace of Base’s The Sign. Classic.

I got a lot of goodies for Christmas but a couple things I was super excited for was the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy by Kevin Kwan. I loved the movie so much so I’m excited to read them! My sister also got me a calligraphy set and voucher for an online class! She is my biggest supporter to keep writing so I’m excited to start that and see my handwriting improve.

How did you celebrate the holidays?
xoxo

Weekend Highlights

Welcome back to another Monday. We all dread Mondays but I saw something cool this morning on someone’s Instagram story that I really liked. It made me want to start my Monday over. It said:

Do sharks complain about Monday?

No. They’re up early, biting stuff, chasing shit, being scary – reminding everyone they’re a f****** shark.

Steph

I don’t have many pictures of this weekend but it was still a good one. On Friday night, Adam and I went to Market Street Grill with his mom for dinner and then went back to her house to play Liverpool. I like card games like that a lot.

Saturday morning, I spent a lot of time out in the yard mowing it and pulling the weeds I had gotten behind on. That clover stuff is taking over our grass! I sprayed something for it a few weeks ago but it is so much worse now! Adam bought something new to try but we’ll see what it does. Anyone have any suggestions for it??

That night, Adam and I went and saw Crazy Rich Asians and I thought it was so good! I need to read the book now. I had heard it was good but the main reason we went and saw it was because Michelle saw it the night before and told me the next morning that I needed to go see it.

Sunday, I decided to tackle what I like to call our “Junk Room.” It’s that empty room where things go when we have no good spot to put them and I would do my ironing in there too. We bought a new mattress for our basement bedroom so we decided to put the old one in this room and make it a guest room. Below is the before!

I feel like I should have taken more pictures because this doesn’t do it justice and show all of the mess.

I organized the ironing stuff in the closet and the rest of the random things in there and was able to shut the doors so it looks cleaner. Adam unpacked his last two boxes from the move and put everything in his gun cabinet. I’m not sure where that will end up eventually, especially with kids. Now I just need to go find a cute quilt or duvet for the bed and then I will pick sheets out to match. Eventually, we’ll repaint this room and decide if it’s will be a nursery or not but for now, this works great. Hope you like your bedroom, Michelle!

That night, we went up the canyon in Bountiful to Mueller Park and had dinner and a fire. The kids had fun playing down in the creek. I forget how much the temperature changes up there so I froze but I will remember better for next year. It was nice to go up there to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Like Steph said, Friday night, some friends and I went and saw Crazy Rich Asians. It was beautiful. I haven’t cried in a movie in a while but that one made me tear up. I loved it so much! I’m so glad Steph went and saw it too.

On Saturday, my family and I ate breakfast, which was nice because we rarely, if ever, get a chance to do that on Saturdays. That night, I hung out with Cody and some of our friends in Herriman and it was so much fun. You are always laughing with these guys.

Sunday was a pretty chill day, I spent the day with my family and we watched Escaping Polygamy which if you haven’t seen, you should. It’s about the Kingston clan in Utah, a prominent polygamous group who marry young girls to their own family members to “preserve the bloodline”. All of it is so sick but we’ve been a little addicted to the show. We watched an episode Sunday and it sparked this huge conversation between the 4 of us. By the time we realized, it had been like 2 or 3 hours of straight conversation but it was a lot of fun.

Last night, I went over to Cody’s to hang out. We watched Little Giants, one of my favorite movies from when I was younger. He fried up some potstickers from Costco that were freaking delicious and also decided to put a raw egg in his ramen that he was going to cook in the microwave and that was a bad idea because it exploded. It was pretty funny.

All in all, it was a pretty fun weekend.

What did you do this weekend?
