Murder Mystery Parties

One of my absolute favorite things about October is a good murder mystery party! We’ve done a couple throughout the years and we have such a blast every single time. They’re fun to plan and set up and it’s great seeing everyone come fully dressed in costume and in character.

For the last two we threw, we used Night of Mystery downloadable kits and we thought they were great! The first one was called Murder at the Juice Joint and you can get this one here. We threw this party at my friend Paige’s house and we had so much fun.

Paige’s dad is a major car guy and he happened to have cars that looked like they were from this era so he let us take pictures in his garage as well 🙂

We all loved dressing up as flappers and mafia men. This is definitely one I’d love to do again!

The second one we threw was called Totally Rad 80s Prom Gone Bad and this one was also so great! You can get this one here. Everyone came decked out in 80s prom dresses and big hair. We threw this one at my friend Hillary’s house and they made a separate area for pictures that turned out pretty great.

We had some great times and none of us could stop laughing. These murder mystery parties are perfect for spending a night with your favorite people. You will not regret it!

If you throw a murder mystery party, let us know! We’d love to see your pictures!

Fall Food

It’s October and I am officially in pumpkin and fall food mode. I thought I would share with you some of what I’ve tried lately that I’ve really liked.

Earlier this week, I made pumpkin chocolate chip cookies from a recipe I found on Pinterest. I think they turned out really good! I was worried I wouldn’t get the right texture of the cookie but it came out great and was an easy recipe.

I enjoy baking and Adam and I can’t eat all of these treats ourselves so my team at work is lucky and reaps the benefits when I’m in a baking mood. You can find the recipe for these pumpkin chocolate chip cookies here.

Last week, I made this Taco Tortellini Soup that is in Shay Shull’s cookbook Simmers. It was a really easy crockpot meal and was really filling for a soup. I just switched out the black beans for pinto because Adam doesn’t like black beans. That was one I will be making again real soon. It heated up really well as a leftover too. Sorry, no picture because I honestly didn’t think about it until later but it is worth trying!

Last weekend, I went to Trader Joe’s. There isn’t one super close to me and I usually just like going for their seasonal food because it’s usually pretty good.

I picked up these pumpkin spice cookies and they are delicious! It’s a subtle hint of pumpkin which I liked. Adam likes this pumpkin pancake mix so I’ve bought it the last couple of years in the fall. Can you tell I like pumpkin? Weirdly enough, I HATE the smell of canned pumpkin. It just grosses me out.

When I go to Trader Joe’s in the fall and winter, I always pick up some of their apple cider. They’ve had different versions over the years but they’re all good. I don’t drink coffee and I’m not much of a fan of hot chocolate but I like hot drinks so this does the trick when I’m really cold.

The other thing I bought at Trader Joe’s is this cinnamon raisin bread. They carry it year-round and if you don’t like raisins they have a cinnamon swirl bread you can get. It’s thickly sliced and is going to taste so good as french toast this weekend!

The last thing I’ve been loving lately is these Mini Pumpkin Cream Pies from Andrea with Momfessionals. She is one of my favorite blogs to read. I’ve had these on my list to try for a while and I have a team meeting today at work so I took that as a good time to try them.

They were pretty easy to make but just a little more time-consuming. You have to pipe the frosting and cookie dough out and I had never done that but it was a good learning experience. Andrea said she gets about 40 pies by the end I think. I think I made mine too big so I didn’t get that many but now I know for next time. I will be saving this recipe!

This is a little bit of what I’ve tried and loved lately. When I have more I will share them in another post. Do you have any pumpkin or fall recipes I need to try? Clearly, I’m embracing all the pumpkin!

Xoxo, Steph

Fall Traditions

I love when fall starts because it means the start of the holidays. I love the smells, the weather, the decorations, the food and all of the activities. I’ve already started taking advantage of some activities and have others planned. If you’re local in Utah, I will link up some of my ideas.

Last weekend, Michelle and I went up to Snowbird Ski Resort to Oktoberfest with some friends and we had a great time. Adam and I have gone for a few years now and I love it because it’s cooler up there than down in the valley so it always feels a little more like fall and it is so beautiful up there. It’s fun to just walk around and look at the booths and they always have good food too. Every time I walked past the booth this year that had the desserts, I was dying over the smell. I wanted EVERYTHING!

They also have fun activities for kids there and you can ride the tram up the mountain if you want, too. Definitely something we do every year.

Adam and I have plans to watch Hocus Pocus one weekend this month too. I am such a wimp about anything remotely scary so that’s about as far as I go with Halloween movies. Michelle likes them so I bet she will do a post about her favorites. But once Thanksgiving is over, I will be all about those Christmas movies and the Hallmark Channel.

Image result for hocus pocus

Since Adam and I started dating, we’ve always carved pumpkins with friends or family.

We look like little babies! This was our first Halloween 6 years ago when I still lived in Logan for school. I think it might even be our first picture together.

This year, we’ve planned a night with some of my family to have dinner and carve pumpkins at our house. It’s funny how life changes because now there are nieces and nephews that come and it’s fun seeing them try and carve pumpkins with their parents. Then, of course, we put the pumpkins on the porch with a candle inside. I’ll be sure to take a picture this year!

My sister, Jen, told me about this company called Crust Club that will deliver the dinner or dessert to your house and you just pop it in the oven. We’re going to try out the chicken pot pie when we have our pumpkin night. It looked pretty good and I thought it was reasonably priced.

I think other fun activities could be going on a hay bale ride, going to a pumpkin patch or if you’re into the scary stuff you could go to a haunted house. Michelle asked me if I would be open to trying out all of the haunted houses in Utah and then writing about it and I was like, that is a hard no for me! I get scared so easily.

I’ve decided that next year, I’m going to plant different pumpkins in my yard so that I can use them as decorations next year and I am pretty excited about it. I just hope it works. I am not the best at keeping plants alive. I currently have a succulent in my kitchen window that is slowly dying and I thought those were supposed to be pretty hard to kill.

What are your fall traditions? I’m always looking for new ideas of fun things to do!

xoxo, Steph

10 Things Making Me Happy Right Now

Hello! It’s Steph here. With summer coming to an end, I am getting really excited for fall so I thought I would write about 10 things making me happy right now.

  1. The weather is getting cooler which means my house is getting cooler at night. I am a really hot sleeper at night so I love the cold. Weirdly enough, I freeze at work.
  2. Fall decorations. I finished putting them up tonight, lit a candle and turned on my lamps. There’s just something about a cozy house. I’ll be sure to post some pictures later.
  3. Adam is not into mushy stuff and I didn’t think we would be doing anything for our anniversary and I was totally fine with that even though I like that stuff to a degree. But he surprised me when he said he wanted to go somewhere nice for dinner and picked somewhere he knew I would like. He even told them it was our anniversary so there was a nice little surprise when we got there. It’s a sweet memory I will always remember.
  4. We’re going to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park in a few days and I am really excited to be traveling somewhere we’ve both never been and seeing some beautiful scenery.
  5. Cooler weather also means that yard work will kind of slow down. I know the leaves will be coming but I’m getting closer to not having to mow the lawn. Our backyard is mostly a hill so it is pretty exhausting to mow.
  6. I am already looking at fall recipes and desserts for ideas of things to try. It just puts me in a great mood.
  7. This one is silly but my mom had some of those black and yellow plastic bins from Costco that she didn’t need anymore so she gave some to me. I personally don’t think you can ever have enough of those and I’m pretty happy to use them to organize something even better. I love organizing.
  8. Has anyone seen the movie, “To All the Boys I Loved Before?” It’s a Netflix original. Michelle told me to watch it so I did and then I found out it was based on a book and that there were three books in the series so I bought all three books to read. I haven’t finished them yet but I just watched the movie for the second time. It’s just a feel-good chick flick.
  9. One of my friends from college is a nurse and she was being trained on laser hair removal and she needed some people to practice on. I happily volunteered and she did one treatment on my underarms and I can already see such a difference! It’s funny how exciting it’s been to not have to worry so much about whether or not I remembered to shave and what shirt I was planning on wearing. I can’t wait to go back and finish the treatments.
  10. A girl that was doing my nails told me about a podcast called, “Lore.” Aaron Mahnke tells short true-life scary stories. I’m a wimp with scary stuff and this wasn’t too scary. I started listening to it while I get ready for work in the morning. Each episode is less than 30 minutes so I get to listen to an episode every morning and I’ve really enjoyed it. Luckily there are already quite a few episodes so I haven’t run out of them yet and had to wait for new ones to come out.

It surprised me towards the end that I was having a hard time to come up with things to write about. It was a good reminder for me to be more mindful and look for the things that make me happy. I need to look for the positive and good in things.
